What is Formation Evaluation?

In petroleum exploration, formation evaluation is a method to determine a borehole’s ability to produce petrol. It’s the process of determining if a drilled well is commercial or not.

Formation rotary drilling prevents blowouts by using heavy mud to lubricate and produce a sequestered pressure on the formation face in the borehole. Rarely do oil and gas wells have a blowout. This has an environmental and financial disaster.

However, there are disadvantages to controlling blowouts. On the side of the hole, there are mud cake plasters and mud filtrate seeps into the formation around the borehole.

They obscure the presence of gas or oil in porous formations. Small quantities of petroleum in the rocks of multiple sedimentary provinces further complicates the problem. It is not feasible to continue drilling when a sedimentary province doesn’t have traces of petroleum.

Formation evaluation answers two questions

  1. What are the lower limits of permeability and porosity as well as the upper limits for water saturation that allow profitable production from a pay zone in a specific economic climate?
  2. Do any formations in wells under construction go over these lower limits?

Tools for formation evaluation include

  • Well Logging
  • Coring
  • Mud logging
  • Wireline logging
  • Electric logs
  • Porosity logs
  • Lithology logs

Comprehensive formation evaluation is performed by integrating cores, well tests, logs and other engineering and geoscience information. It is important in resource assessment, reservoir surveillance and well-placement development.

Benefits of Globat’s Formation Evaluation Course

Upon completion of the formation evaluation course, you’ll gain knowledge of tools used in the logging operation, identifying reservoir quality rock, basic qualitative analysis, lithology determination from logs and more.

More specifically, you’ll be able to compute essential reservoir parameters such as lithology, porosity, water saturation, resistivity and shale volume.

Globat instructors teach you how to read and interpret well logs, analyse measurements and run environmental corrections for logging tools. The course explores the response of tools to different lithology and helps you understand log reads, limitations and applications.

In addition, Globat Oil and Gas Formation Evaluation training course covers quality assurance and quality control process for raw well logs and the outputs interpretation. Training participants will determine the free water level and reservoir fluid contracts. You’ll also learn the core analysis studies for minimising the uncertainty in log interpretation outputs such as permeability, porosity and fluid saturation.

Training Methodology

Gloat Skills employs learning techniques to ensure complete comprehension and retention of information shared during the training. Sessions include auditory, visuals and pratical elements that cover all learning modalities. Daily training sessions will be participative and highly interactive. We use hands-on exercises as well as regular classroom discussions to solve problems.

Globat instructors use multiple examples to facilitate learning and understanding of formation evaluation techniques. Hands-on exercises are conducted either through Microsoft Excel or manually. We’ll provide comprehensive course materials during the course.
